heywilma: ([ s&s ] mr palmer will never approve)
I find that I tend to be more impressed by bad movies upon initial viewing. Unless something completely blows me away, I often need to watch a movie a second time to register how good they are. Case in point: Speed Racer (look I make absolutely no apologies for loving this movie), Lords of Dogtown (not one person I know has seen this, why why why), Mean Girls (I know), Sense and Sentibility (I'm sorry Mr Palmer), etc etc. Now The Kids are All Right has to be added to that list.

This is problematic because I tend to overrate bad movies and underrate good ones. If I could take back my glowing reviews of X-Men: The Last Stand, I would. If I ever recommend you a movie I've just seen, and just saw for the first time, ask me if I mean it.

/lol Konglish.

Reading my Yuletide gift again, and I still love it, oh my god. Need to rewatch this movie at some point, I think. Sometimes I feel like the hard-on I have for the movie is bordering on ridiculous.

Saw Inception on Saturday, and that was very enjoyable. Looks like Leo DiCaprio is really into the whole mindbending thing atm. I know everyone's been creaming themselves over it, but like with other Christopher Nolan films, I left the cinema feeling slightly underwhelmed, especially given the hype. I loved all the actors in their respective roles (especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Cillian Murphy, unf) but the plot didn't leave as much of an impression. The theory was trippy, but the story definitely had room for improvement. Besides that moment, I'm just not feeling the mindfuck that a lot of other people are saying. I think people tend to overthink Nolan films, where they're actually fairly straightforward.

Anyway, Kick-Ass is still my favourite movie of the year. Let's see if some of the other movies I'm looking forward to - Scott Pilgrim, Green Hornet, The Social Network - can dethrone it.
heywilma: ([ hot fuzz ] is this shit f'real)
Since I first heard about this movie I've been looking forward to it, so when they were giving away free passes to a preview screening I jumped at the chance. And now I see why opinions on the internet are so polarising. Mild spoilers. )

The List

Some things on my shelf that I need to read/watch at one point. I have a habit of buying things, I realise that. Hooboy.

In alphabetical order: DVDs )

In no particular order: Books )

In other news, the new MacBook Pro is out. As far as I can tell, the 13-inch version has exactly the same specs and features (with an additional SD card slot) as my machine, the only difference being that it is about $200 cheaper. Sigh, whatever, I'm moving on... onto saving for a decent camera, for one.

Some plans for this week:

Tomorrow - go shopping for... really belated Christmas presents. Er >.> Work after that. And possibly movie marathon after that.
Wednesday - vacuum and clean, because mum gets back on Thursday. Yes, if not to appease my mother I would happily live in a pigsty, and I could deal with never finding anything.
Thursday - should probably do laundry. I am already starting to run out of underwear.
Friday - chillaxing. I have an unfinished Rome boxset and I am not afraid to watch it all day :D
Saturday - murder party :D
Sunday - ??? WHO KNOWS.

After watching Slumdog Millionaire, I've decided that Danny Boyle is pretty much consistently brilliant. Granted I've only seen three of his movies so far, but they all rated very highly with me personally.

And related, movies of 2008 in review. May contain spoilers zomg. )

LJ didn't eat it :D
heywilma: ([ misc ] END! NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH)

I feel that you really need to have a sadistic streak to become a dentist - why else would they invent giant needles to stick in people's faces?

Speed Racer, though, WAS SO MUCH FUN. I went into the cinema expecting hot boys, fast cars, psychedelic colours and fantastic special effects, which was exactly what I got. Also John Goodman being awesome. Plot? Who cares about plot? :D :D :D

And now I have the theme song stuck in my head. Go Speed Racer! Go Speed Racer! Go Speed Racer Go!

So the trailer for Burn After Reading looks really awesome, not least because Brad Pitt's hair is absolutely hilarious. And an actual Australian release date! Which rocks. And means that someone is going to be roped into seeing this with me :D

I canhas:
- 6 days before my last assignment is due.
- 12 days before my stupid maths-containing first exam.
- 14 days before DELICOUS FREEDOM.
- 21 days before plane funs + Chinanaland.

June'll be a fun month.

A 'garrrgh'! and a 'grrrr'! to Getty's watermarks. Jenni is now indefinitely annoyed, and will spend the rest of her day talking about herself in the third person.

In other news, Jenni is away for one day, and look what she saw when she got back. She SQUEEs. XA LIVES!

She also wants to perve on Jude Law see I Heart Huckabees.
