I think everyone will understand me when I say ‘typical Jackie Chan film’. The only exceptions being his earlier works in Hong Kong, Jackie’s Hollywood efforts have mostly went like this:
Jackie= Good Guy. Yes, the capital Gs.
Bad guy= Really obvious.
Jackie’s sidekick= Not Asian; if male, then will get together with another person; if female, then will get together with Jackie.
Story= Something that involves mobs, so Jackie can kick their ass while his sidekick makes for slapstick comedy and witty comments in the background.
Ending= Bad guy defeated/killed; none of the main characters die; mission is accomplished and everyone lives happily ever after. Until the sequel.
So many Jackie Chan movies follow these patterns, especially his newer stuff and/or Hollywood productions: Mr Nice Guy, Who Am I, Gorgeous, Rush Hour 1+2, Shanghai series, The Tuxedo, The Medallion etc.
And now he’ll have a whole new film to add to that list!
Yup, Around The World In 80 Days is definitely a run of the mill JC film. The only exception being that now JC is the sidekick. But the story still revolves around him/jade Buddha.
Once you’ve seen the beginning of the movie, you’ll know what’s going to happen in the end.
The film itself is very, very mediocre, but seeing it badly dubbed just brings it to a new level of low.
Plenty of laughs, of course, and the oh-so-well known JC style fights, but then again, Jackie’s films have never been known for their great intellectual substance. The scene at the art gallery was quite funny, with the assassins.
Highlights will have to be the various cameos: look out for Rob Schneider, the Wilson brothers, Macy Gray, and Ah-nuld. The Ah-nuld episode was a whole lot of fun. Karen Mok was great, as always. (Hmmm, maybe I’m just a little biased because I like her music…) The fight at the Statue of Liberty, though… Deathstrike, anyone?
It’s really the little stuff and the attention to minor details that provide the laughs. Watch out for the old woman with the handbag, Passportou’s mother, and the peeing civilian.
Overall: 6.5/10
