This meme has been going on over at IJ, it's kind of an exercise in vanity, but whatever, I am vain so I'm gonna roll with it.

Ask me questions/to do things/opinions/etcetc and I will answer them in a video!

Unrelatedly, I think I figured out why Glee bothers me so much, other than the inconsistency of the writing – I don't have a favourite character. Usually in ensemble shows, I either have a favourite, or I love the whole cast pretty much equally. See: The West Wing for #1 (CJ), and Modern Family or Firefly for #2.

With Glee though, due to the characterisation fluctuations, and the fact that all the major storylines involve the 'main' four kids (EVEN THOUGH IT IS AN ENSEMBLE SHOW. I know Lea Michele sells songs, and she is the best singer, but there has got to be some way where she still sings but other people get plot as well), makes it hard to like the secondary characters, especially when the few they focus on are so unlikeable.

The closest thing I have to a 'favourite' on this show are Brittany and Mike, but other than sprouting some random awesome lines, we know nothing about them. Mike has never gotten a real storyline (I'm not counting like a half-episode arc as a storyline, no), and Brittany is only just getting more screen time, even then it's mostly in support to Santana.

That irks me. And as I've said before, if Rachel and Finn get back together I cannot anymore with this show.

It has been a pretty long day. A pretty long week, actually. I just want to lounge around for a day, sleep in, watch some Lost, read a bit, eat ice cream. University fatigue, I think. So, meme to alleviate some of that.

List 10 TV shows you like, in no specific order. Do this before reading the questions below.

Seriously random list - half of them I'm currently watching, half I've just grabbed out of thin air.

10. Glee
9. Lost
8. Ugly Betty
7. Dr Who
6. FlashForward
5. Dollhouse
4. Life on Mars
3. Veronica Mars
2. Scrubs
1. The West Wing

At first I didn't want to recommend another song for this week, because where is the variety? The spice! It's bog-standard and not changing anything up! But I am currently obsessed with this mash-up, and have it on repeat in Itunes, because it's that amazing.

This was the only thing on my LJ profile for the longest time, and it's probably still one of my favourite quotes. I just remember that passage being incredibly moving, while I was reading the book, for reasons I'm still not entirely sure of. From George Orwell's 1984:

Tragedy, he perceived, belonged to the ancient time, to a time when there was still privacy, love, and friendship, and when the members of a family stood by one another without needing to know the reason. His mother’s memory tore at his heart because she had died loving him, when he was too young and selfish to love her in return, and because somehow, he did not remember how, she had sacrificed herself to a conception of loyalty that was private and unalterable.

Out of the 11 favourited videos on YouTube (I know, but I almost never click that heart), six of them are of GLAY. And of the remaining five, I have flogged this one at every chance I get – yes, this is another flog; this is the condensed version, if you want to get right down to business – so I figured I'd try something different this time.

Everyone loves The Lonely Island. I don't think I can go wrong with them. Even if you have seen this before, there are worse things in this world than watching it again :D

And by the doctor, I mean my Dad, who woke me up (unintentionally, with all his getting ready) at 6am, so I've been feeling a little off all day. Almost had to pull an overtime, but was thankfully rescued by Jeremy, who is obviously the Best Supervisor Ever. Anyway, before Dad went on his no doubt most excellent work adventure in China, he told me to 1. stay safe, and 2. study hard.

Way to have priorities, mate.

Day 4!

My bookmarks folder is tiny and over-organised, and I honestly don't have a website that I feel is a must-see. I do really love the Desktop Wallpaper Project though, where a wallpaper is posted every week. Actually, I don't think it's been updated for a couple of weeks now, but there's a significant backlog of wallpapers, so plenty to choose from.

There's a great range, and they're are so creative. The best thing about having different artists contribute is that there's a fantastic offering of styles, so it doesn't ever get stale, basically.

Unrelated to that, but entertaining nonetheless, The Daily What. I'm apparently really bad at the whole recommend one thing thing.

I wish to rewatch this week's Glee's impromptu jam session. I think I will do just that right now.

Honestly, I'm a little bit stuck on this one. Lately all the fics I read have been Speed Racer ([livejournal.com profile] oxymoronic has some excellent ones), yes, it's a disease/I am terrible etc. Got directed to atrata's heartbreaking The Princess Bride fic via [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes a while back, and I thought it was definitely worth a mention, because even though it is heartbreaking, it's truly fantastic, and you should read it if you haven't already.

My book list was not all that big of a help, because a lot of the ones on there are critically acclaimed (thank you, English lit course), and they really don't need me to laud their virtues when dozens and dozens of reviews have done it already. I am currently writing an essay on The White Tiger 200... more... words, however, and I can attest to the richness of that novel, especially if you're keen on dissecting its themes from a colonial standpoint. The quote up the top there is from that book. I lol'd.

Perusing my list, though, I did spot one that was fairly obscure, one that I'm sure not a lot of people have heard of - Pyongyang, by Guy Delisle. I first spotted this book at Borders a few years ago, but it disappeared off the shelf (nicely done, stranger who bought it. Nicely done) and it apparently didn't occur to me to look elsewhere. Say, a comic shop. Because it's a comic.

The next time I spotted it was on [livejournal.com profile] ittykat's shelf, and I pretty much immediately snatched it up. Now I have my own copy, and have been trying to flog it to Dad, to no avail, because he doesn't read. The subject is interesting – it documents the author's time spent in Pyongyang for work, and his various misadventures. It's nonjudgmental, and not at all politically skewered, just one man's experience in one of the most secluded countries in the world. The art is simple but incredibly charming, and I really enjoyed the matter-of-fact way events are presented, with (as far as I know), little embellishment.

Related, but not as compelling as Pyongyang was, is Delisle's Shenzhen, A Travelogue from China. I also would love to get my hands on Burma Chronicles, and will definitely be keeping an eye out next time I'm at the comic store.

I feel like I may be in need of a more book-y reading icon.

To add: To explain my growing fondness of Simon Armitage: for ENGL1500 we're reading a selection of his poems, and although I'm by and large not particularly appreciative of poetry, I am not entirely rejecting what I'm seeing. My current favourites are two, this first one is untitled, from his book Xanadu. I love the way it's constructed, basically: Simon Armitage -- a poem from Xanadu )

My other favourite, one that is actually emotive, and beautiful on a few different levels, is called To His Lost Lover.

Since I am basically leaving tomorrow, should probably give a head's up - I'll be in China until mid-July, sweating it out and possibly interning for BOCOG (we'll see >.>). I don't know if the great firewall does block LJ, since it worked fine when I was over there in 2006/7, but it might be a more recent thing. In any case, I don't even know what the internet situation is going to be like, since I'll be living with my grandparents, and all they have is an ancient computer that, although connected to broadband, is riddled with viruses and makes loud scary noises and has only one working USB port.

Hopefully I'll be too occupied with bad TV to internet anyway! If any of these factors limit my visit to LJ, then see you all in three weeks! <3

Anyway, for those who missed my last post with the poll, I'd really appreciate it if you could make a slight detour and take a look, fill it out, maybe leave me a comment with your take on the matter? I just need a couple more people to do that, especially if you're a boy/man/person of the male persuasion!

The assignment's coming along okay, I'm jotting down my thoughts as I go, and reading back, I sound like some sort of fat harpy complaining about stupid Western culture beauty standards. Suppose that's kinda true.

Armoured bears named Iorek Iorek, of His Dark Materials fame, is a giant, armour-wearing, talking polar bear who was framed for the murder of a fellow bear. What's not to like? And he's just so... honourable. If Iorek was a man I'd totally tap it.

Mind crack AKA Mindporn/brainporn, it's what I live for. Most of this porn occur in fandom, predominantly in RP. It's the kind of drug even poor kids can afford, and the headrush is better than sugar.

S.Lebeouf not playing Yorick This originally was supposed to be "Shia Lebeouf not being cast as Yorick", but LJ only let me have four words, so I had to shorten it. If you're a fan of Y: The Last Man, you'll probably know that there's a movie coming out. BKV is rumoured to be writing the screenplay, and casting speculation is that Shia Lebeouf is going to play Yorick, a choice that I vehemently oppose. I've never seen him in anything, and I've heard that he's a good actor, but he just doesn't feel like Yorick to me.

Goong This means "palace" in Korean. It's a KTV drama, also called "Princess Hours", which I was very into last month. Still am, though not as much as I was. The plot is a little ridiculous, but it's an Asian soapy! What do you expect? The costumes are pretty, the girls are ditzy and the boys are hot. You seriously can't complain about that.

Brian K. Vaughan BKV, AKA God of Comics, creator of such awesome comic series' such as Runaways, Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina. Now a staff writer for Lost. Wrote the first few issues for Mystique before it went to crap, and is currently guesting an arc for Buffy season eight, and what he's got now is so much better than what Joss Whedon was doing to it. I love BKV's quirky characters. His plot may leave some to be desired, but he's an incredible writer when it comes to character/dialogue-driven pieces. My favourite comic writer by far.

Explaining X-Men to non-fans That's really self-explanatory, but the way it came by is a funny story. Ruth and I were attempting to condense about 40 years of X-Men canon so that it could be better explained to someone who had never come across it before, and then we realised how incredibly fucked up X-Men must sound to an outsider, and that we're really all weirdos.

Joo Ji Hoon Actor/Korean hottie. That's him in the icon. He plays the male protagonist in Goong. Liv and I sometimes call him CK model, 'cause he used to be a model (he's very tall for an Asian). I was wiki-ing him one day, and found out that he used to model for Calvin Klein. And who is CK's most notorious model? Travis Fimmel. For what? Underwear. And thus the fantasy of Joo Ji-Hoon in nothing but a pair of dacks began. Oh, he's a pretty good actor too, a nice range and depth for someone who used to pose with really bad hairdos.

In other news! I completed both my assignments due tomorrow. I need to take a day off.

Microeconomics is actually really interesting, something that never fails to surprise me. It raises a couple of very good questions, especially when it comes into conflict with other things. Such as morals and common sense. Well, not so much the common sense, because apparently economics is more common-sensical than most things out there- and certainly more so than accounting!- and more people need to think like economists.

For example, if we're to believe that we should let economic systems govern themselves (i.e. the invisible hand, a theory pioneered by Adam Smith but apparently described in great detail by a Chinese historian 300 years before Smith came up with it), then all this nonsense about the government restricting the sale of human body parts should just be scrapped. It makes sense from an economic point of view, of course, but this is something that is just... fundamentally wrong in society, regardless of supply (currently 0. Legally, anyway) and demand (very high).

I love this sort of stuff.

Have you met my daemon? His name is Gerald Butle- I mean Leonidas. )
