A Drabble A Day: warm up

Fandom: Dr Who
Characters: Donna Noble
Word count: 430

Spoiler warning for season four.

Everyone told her she was lucky to have snagged this man, and Donna agreed with them. It must've been some kind of fluke, she'd often think to herself, but to her girlfriends she'd say no such thing; especially Noelle, who used to brag about her legal secretary boyfriend. Ha! Legal secretary. Donna Noble was moving up in the world, moving a long way above that.

Her mother didn't approve, as always. Donna didn't care, though, and liked to rub it in her face. "He's in paediatrics, mum. You'd want a son-in-law who's good with children, wouldn't you", or "how many people you know get hitched to doctors?" And every time her mother would look away, and her granddad would stop what he was doing and try to pick at something that had gotten in his eye. Donna didn't know why her family couldn't just be happy for her, for once.

They liked to call each other up, Donna and her doctor. She took this as a plus, that her man was one of the few left who still had a romantic bone in his body. Donna's new boss didn't like this (as any boss wouldn't), so now she had to sneak calls in during work. Maybe she wouldn't even refer to him by name, make everyone think she had a dentist's appointment, or something.

The phone hardly ran before he picked up. Donna smiled smugly.

"Doctor?" she said loudly, cementing that dentist lie. "Donna. I was wondering if my appointment could be-"

Unnatural blood coloured eyes, face like a monster but such kindness in their hearts. Trapped mind freed, the light shining. Cold wind on her face, the feeling of luxurious fur. The gratitude of a species as a common thought linked up thousands of consciousnesses.

"Doctor Donna."

"- moved forward to lunch? I've got a long break today. 11:30? Perfect." Her man was smart, that was for sure. None of the bewildered 'what are you talking about, Donna? What appointment?' questions some of her ex-boyfriends would be asking her.

"Lunch date?" May from the next cubicle asked quietly, after Donna had hung up. "With that lovely doctor, Donna?"

There it was again, "Doctor Donna". She saved the world, "Doctor Donna", she was someone, "Doctor Donna", she, and all these brilliant thoughts in her head, "Doctor-"

"Donna? You all right?"

And Donna didn't even remember what she was thinking about, or why she was struck by a sudden urge to cry. "No, yeah," she coughed, rubbing at her eyes. "Yeah, I'm alright. Got a date with my doctor today, don't I?"
