Of course it had to be Christmas - our internet was knocked out on the 25th (I'm at Dad's office at the moment, and will be calling Telstra in a fit of rage because the phone isn't working anymore either) and with the public holidays etc etc I dunno when everything's going to be fixed, and that's not taking into consideration the giant slow Telstra is at the best of times.

Dad and I had a really quiet day, which basically consisted of TV and naps. We watched Aftershocks after dinner and were both blubbering messes by the end of it. Kids - movies about the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, not great viewing for happy fun times.

So yeah. Hello briefly! Goodbye! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday and followed it up with some bargain shopping (I may be headed to a Big W later and picking up a Wii :D), and a happy new year ahead! ♥

Things that are good to know: my UQ log-in still works; I've done most of my to-do list; and learning is not dead - there's a bunch of free books outside the Biolsci library, and these guys are just all over it. I haven't seen such frenzy outside of a 70% off shoe sale.

Hi ho, it's off to work I go.

Dear Yuletide Santa,

Welcome to my letter of questionable helpfulness! I was just rereading the things I put in last year's, and it basically amounted to – "I like stuff :D", and this year's is probably not going to be any different. I am similarly excited for my story, that's for sure!

First off, just some general things! I love character studies of any kind, I love realism, I love banter, I love platonic relationships, but of course, shippy would not go amiss, in the right situations! Bromance, fights, hurt/comfort and mantears pushes my buttons like you wouldn't believe. I am such a sucker for happy endings, however, there is a special place in my heart for things that rip out my heart and trod all over it :D

Speed Racer, Rex Racer/Racer X, Speed Racer, Inspector Detector
Rex/X is my absolute favourite, and anything involving him I would lap up eagerly! I love his relationship with Speed and the Inspector in the movie, but there were some very rigidly defined identities at work – some further exploration of how the X + Speed and Rex + the Inspector dynamics work would be delicious. If possible, I'd love to avoid Racercest here – the familial love and the bromance is most interesting to me!

Ace Attorney, Maya Fey, Phoenix Wright
Oh Maya, how I have missed her. Possibly because of the lack of Feys in Apollo Justice, I haven't managed to finish that game :( (Hobo Nick was my favourite thing about it, as previously mentioned). I'd always wondered where Maya was during that time, though, given their closeness, where she was when Nick really needed someone, with the disbarring and Trudy and everything. Fill the gaps for me? :)

Nick/Maya has been a longstanding but always-unfulfilled OTP of mine, but on the other hand, gosh, their friendship is such that I wouldn't mind that part staying unfulfilled a little longer!

Ugly Betty, Betty Suarez, Daniel Meade
The cancellation of this show broke my heart. I loved that... karmic callback, I guess you could call it, of the finale, but it left me wanting. I wanted to see a successful, mature Betty interacting with the new and old people in her life. I wanted to see her relationship with Daniel reach a satisfying point for both of them. It felt unfinished, and I'd love to see some kind of continuation!

Of course, these are mere suggestions – any fic in any of these fandoms would make me beyond happy, and thank you in advance for the story you are about to write!

♥ Jenni
heywilma: ([ r | linney ] it's deeply satisfying)
So the only good thing about Eat Pray Love – okay, two good things, the second being Javier Bardem with his Australian son, which I find so inexplicably hot. The first good thing was how amazing all the food looked. Fig and prosciutto? I am down for some of that.

I had a mango today, which in itself isn't out of the ordinary I guess. It was a mango, and I ate it. The thing is I never really liked mangoes – I'll eat them but I wouldn't go out of my way to find some. It's because the first summer I was in Brisbane, I think, my parents used to buy fruit and veg in bulk because it was cheaper, but it also meant that we were stuck eating whatever it was about two weeks in a row, and I overdosed on mangoes. So started my indifference to them, until about two or three weeks ago we started getting mangoes at work again, and the sheer smell made me realise how much I missed them. Like, where the hell have you been this long, cold winter, mangoes? Now get in my belly.

Today's was an R2E2 mango. Maybe next time I'll go for a Kensington.

Going with the whole food theme: I tried some liverwurst the other day, hello acquired taste. It is strangely compelling though.
heywilma: ([ misc ] END! NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH)
Things that will be the death of me:

1. BPAL, homg grabby hands.
2. Echo Bazaar, so addictive.
3. Ian McEwan books. On Chesil Beach made me die a little inside, guys. Is this what the world is like? Cold and hopeless and depressing.

In other news: STILL MY FAVOURITE SONG RN

heywilma: ([ lom ] the world kicks when he's down)
I've got that woozy feeling where my body wants to sleep badly, but is being prevented by the large amount of coffee that I had early in the morning. Speaking of early in the morning, it is both hilarious and scary how much I managed to not have accomplished since waking up at 8 o'clock.

It's been four hours and I still haven't:
1. Had breakfast, besides that coffee.
2. Started on my assignment that is due tomorrow, even though I said I'd finish it before work this afternoon.
3. Called the coordinator person for my internship, but this one's slightly excusable, since she doesn't get to work until noon.

What I have done:
1. Picked up parcel from delivery center, which they supposedly tried to deliver yesterday but no one answered the door or whatever. I DIDN'T HEAR NO KNOCKING, YO. Ignoring the fact that I slept until 10
2. ... Had coffee.

Haha um.

ETA random thought that doesn't really warrant its own entry: Intro to Film & Television Studies is driving me a little bit crazy. It's all really focused on the technical side of things, which, don't get me wrong, is hugely interesting, but they don't ever really go deep. Sure we explore some meaning through the use of technique, but for someone like me who is so used to critical analysis in basically all of my courses throughout my degree, this surface-skimming is frustrating.

Yeah yeah we get that it's hard to see the road when it's dark and wet and I totally get the desire to put on your high beams in order to navigate better.

However, please to be not doing it when you are tailgating me. In fact, please do not tailgate me in the first place.

I'm really hoping this rain continues tomorrow, so that it doesn't get too busy at work >.> Because we are right next to the train station, and with a) all the people coming and going to the Ekka, and b) everyone who canhas the day off to shop, it is probably going to be crazypants. It will help to just... sit back and think of the money. Sweet sweet double and a half pay.

/lol Konglish.

Reading my Yuletide gift again, and I still love it, oh my god. Need to rewatch this movie at some point, I think. Sometimes I feel like the hard-on I have for the movie is bordering on ridiculous.

Saw Inception on Saturday, and that was very enjoyable. Looks like Leo DiCaprio is really into the whole mindbending thing atm. I know everyone's been creaming themselves over it, but like with other Christopher Nolan films, I left the cinema feeling slightly underwhelmed, especially given the hype. I loved all the actors in their respective roles (especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Cillian Murphy, unf) but the plot didn't leave as much of an impression. The theory was trippy, but the story definitely had room for improvement. Besides that moment, I'm just not feeling the mindfuck that a lot of other people are saying. I think people tend to overthink Nolan films, where they're actually fairly straightforward.

Anyway, Kick-Ass is still my favourite movie of the year. Let's see if some of the other movies I'm looking forward to - Scott Pilgrim, Green Hornet, The Social Network - can dethrone it.
heywilma: ([ disney ] it's not very big)
Random:

Watching a Chinese show on Youtube (they got to visit the Weta workshop, jeluz), which had a little bit of interlude music. I was thinking, "hm this song sounds really familiar, and this singer chick has a decent voice. What is it?"

It was Justin Bieber.
heywilma: ([ merlin ] two stamps of approval!)
Dear MSTU1001 (Introduction to Film and Television Studies):

You look awesome. Really, you do. You are such a great course for film/television nerds such as myself and I am glad that in my last semester of uni there is one elective slot left for me to utilise. Some of your film choices are awesome, and I like that you don't always go for mainstream/contemporary fare (Some Like it Hot, In the Mood for Love, Samson and Delilah, etc), but some of them are just :/ to me. Yes, yes, it's personal taste; yes, yes I can be a snob. I just really don't want to sit through Burn After Reading again. Because that movie was just totally inane. Maybe I missed the point and it'll get better through critical analysis? But, I doubt it.

On the other hand, A+ for including The Rocky Horror Picture Show. A++ if you get people down to do the time warp.

The entire catalogue for the semester, for those two of you who might be interested. )

NGL, though, I am going to enjoy the shit out of this semester \o/

dkfhsdkjfhskdjf so frustrating guys.

Have been without internet since Thursday, and am now at UQ checking my email (full of random newsletter-type ones; when did I sign up for these damn)/doing things I need to do, and THE INTERNET KEEP ON DROPPING OUT ARGH. THIS IS SHIT. I CANNOT KEEP DOING THIS.

I'm basically inundated with things to watch at home, but the thing that I really want to watch (Shining Inheritance, sob, that drama is so cracktastic) I need the internet for :<

Last night I had several strange dreams. In the first one Ron Rifkin was my grandfather and there was crying for some reason, idek.
heywilma: (Default)
Oh, I see now. Because it's not out of anyone's way to stay up until 12am to get their grades, but a lot of students will not bother to get up at 6am to check.

Well played, UQ. Well played.
heywilma: ([ lost ] hbic's melancholy)
I spent the last of my birthday money today, on Lush, books and jewellery. Oh moolah you have served me well, and now I can read while smelling and looking good. A++

Not that I ever need to justify any of my purchases usually (if I did my reasoning would always sound something like "... because I felt like it :D"), but after these last couple of days it feels like I deserved it. Parent drama (one day they'll look back on this and be totally embarrassed, but right now it's just hilarious and exhausting at the same time), studying highs and lows, and some more family drama.

It's wearing me out and really, I needed a good moisturising soap.
heywilma: ([ dr who ] the image held)
Things I need to do today:

  • Finish cleaning my room/s. This is going to take up the majority of my day, I can see it now. It is a truly gargantuan task. So far it's taken me an hour to sort out my bedside stand/drawers, but then it's the one that's holding all of my BPAL (they are now sorted into boxes and all ~organised~ according to frequency of use /nerd). Still. This place is full of so much crap and other stuff that I should really throw away but I never do.
  • Email John Austin. This NEEDS TO HAPPEN BEFORE TOMORROW. Idc if I get it out after he leaves work, I just need to get it out, otherwise I'll just keep putting it off.
  • Vacuum. Yes, today is procrasticleaning day.
  • Pay my phone bill augh. I WILL NOT BE LATE, DAMMIT. I HAVE NEVER BEEN LATE IN PAYING A BILL Just noticed the second email saying that deadline has been extended.
  • Try not to spend any money.
  • Study. Maybe >.>

  • </totally mundane day>

Dr Who this week made me cry so hard. I've been watching so many depressing things lately, and this really needs to be changed, or at least padded by some fluffy happy fare.
    heywilma: ([ r | hisa ] through winter unscathed)
These group assignments are EATING MY LIFE. BPAL is RENDERING ME BANKRUPT. Doctor Who is seriously BRINGING IT. I think I need an Eleven icon. Super Junior's new single is BASICALLY RIDICULOUS. What is with the AUTOTUNE. SERIOUSLY.

Although their photobook is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS and I could just EAT IT UP. Both the scenery and the boys, if you know what I mean. And I think you do.
